Rich lost patience. And if not earthly help, perhaps heavenly . . . D.J. looked up, hoping with all her heart to see bare feet swinging above her. No luck. How could Josie, her guardian angel, have deserted her in her greatest time of need? Unless D.J. and Chris were meant to be together in heaven as they hadn't been on earth. Coldness seeped into her bones at the thought. |

No way. She would fight such a fate with every resource she could dredge up. D.J. bit her lip until she tasted blood and feeling flooded back into her body. "Rich." Her voice wavered, and he glanced at her with a smirk. Like an animal, he could smell her fearand he loved it. She cleared her throat and tried again. "You could care less about me, about Chris and I. You just want to control me as usual. You know being possessive doesn't workand hitting me didn't either." |

"He hit you?" Chris's voice, usually so calm, always the voice of reason, now contained an undercurrent of fury she'd never heard in it before. She looked at him and saw the same fury clouding his face. |

Chris glanced at her and she shook her head, one small shake. Let it go, she thought. Don't lose your temper and get us killed because of something that's over and done with. |

He nodded, as though he'd heard her, then returned his gaze to Rich. The fury faded from his face, but she could still see the anger in the way he clenched his hands. |
